Eyes on the Goal: Lessons from Peter’s Walk on the Water

Storm of Distraction - Eye of Goal

Storms come, my friend. Some you see on the horizon, some sneak up when the skies were just sunny a minute ago. Life has a way of testing your balance, your belief, and your ability to keep moving forward even when the wind howls and the waves slap you in the face.

One of the oldest stories about focus in the middle of chaos comes from the Gospels. The disciples are out on a boat when a storm blows up. Suddenly, they see Jesus walking on the water. At first, they’re terrified, thinking it’s a ghost, but Jesus calls out to them. And Peter — bold, impulsive Peter — says, “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.”

Jesus simply says, “Come.”

And Peter does it. He steps out of the boat, and for a few glorious steps, he’s actually walking on water. Imagine that — gravity suspended, the impossible made possible. But then Peter looks at the waves. He feels the wind. His mind shifts from faith to fear. And the moment his focus wavers, he starts to sink.

The lesson is right there: when Peter kept his eyes on the goal — on Jesus — he stood on the storm. When he let distraction pull him under, the storm swallowed him.

Now, you don’t have to be religious to see the wisdom. Whether you call it faith, purpose, or just your personal North Star, the principle stands: where your focus goes, your footing follows.

The Stoics would nod along here. Epictetus taught that we don’t control the storm, only our response. Marcus Aurelius said, “You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” The waves of life will always rise. Bills, heartbreak, politics, bad news, temptation, anxiety — all winds that try to throw you off course.

But if you keep your eyes on the goal, if you're steady your breath and plant your steps, you can walk through storms without sinking.

So, when the waters get rough, remember Peter. Don’t stare at the waves. Keep your gaze fixed on what matters. That business you’re building. That family you’re protecting. That healing you’re pursuing. That higher calling you’re chasing.

Stay steady. Stay stoned in the Stoic way — rooted, calm, focused.

And if you stumble? If you slip under for a second? Just do what Peter did. Call out. Regain your focus. Stand back up. The storm was never meant to drown you — only to remind you where your strength really comes from.
